Even though I ended up with a c-section, I would recommend Christine and her apprentices to anyone. Throughout most of my pregnancy, when there was no official connection between me and Morning Glory, Betsy was the one who would answer my pregnancy-related questions. When I did officially start care with Christine, the difference between her and the OB/CNMs was astounding - more than "any problems?", she actually checked to see if I was swelling (I was, but hadn't noticed), she suggested a supplement to take care of the slightly low iron levels (which also eliminated the fatigue that I assumed was normal), she gave me papaya extract to take care of the heartburn that was keeping me up for hours. The local CNMs only deliver babies up to 41 weeks - going through Christine allowed my son the extra 4 days he needed to "bake". During labor, she suggested that I transfer at just the right time, when I would've tried to wait it out for hours more (my contractions were breaking up after over 30 hours of labor). She reminded my husband once we got to the hospital that his job was to stay with me when no one else was allowed with me. She reminded me just before I went in for the c-section what drugs I was trying to avoid. I hemorrhaged (I was on the verge of needing a transfusion), and the CNM said that Christine's iron supplement was better than anything she could provide. Christine and Betsy are still answering my questions and my son is two months old. Aside from the tangible benefits... peaceful was not a word I anticipated being able to apply to labor (sure, it was work, but it was calm work). It was wonderful having these cheerful, gentle-spirited women in my home, and I'm honored that they shared that day with me. It made labor a joyful experience, instead of something terrible to get through before I held my son. |
